Songs of the Streets
Part of Bloomsbury Festival’s Strange Doings in London Heritage projectSongs of the Streets is a new 80-page commemorative publication that captures the 1,000-year history of the St Giles-in-the-Fields parish through music, art, and storytelling.
This publication serves as the final record of a year-long project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, exploring the area from Drury Lane to Tottenham Court Road, a neighborhood once known for its notorious "Rookeries" and dramatic past.
Designed by Jeffrey Choy
Inside the Publication:
- The St Giles Songbook: A collection of historical broadside ballads and new songs performed by local community choirs, including the stories and research behind the music.
- Artwork Showcases: Features a site-specific installation by artist Dryden Goodwin, alongside works by 14 volunteer artists and Jane Palm Gold, all responding to the history of the parish.
- Project Retrospective: Excerpts from project blogs, summaries of historical talks, and a look back at the 2024 launch events.
This publication was made possible by National Lottery players through a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
